About this Item
9.5" x 11.5" red cloth boards, ringbound, with "Photo Album" on front. Soiling and minor scuffing. 9 leaves. Contents (some loose, others under protective plastic sheets) include: six 8" x 10" black and white photographs of group shots of post office personnel, including two labled "Oklahoma Postal Training Operations (Norman, OK), Resident Programs Division/Delivery Services Management," and two others with typed label affixed by tape naming those in photo ("Delivery Services Management, June 11-15, 1973" and "Retail Management, September 17-21, 1973"); four typed letters (dated 1971 and the others 1975-1976) from postal customers praising Montgomery for his courtesy at Chicago-area post offices, one from the Chicago Postmaster Emmett Cooper; a United States Postal Service Certificate of Training noting that Montgomery had completed a Job Performance Improvement Program July 1, 1977; a wonderful 5" x 7" color photograph (mid 1960s) of Fred Montgomery as coach to a youth baseball team (Orioles) comprised of ten African American boys, along with two Certificates of Award to Montgomery for participation in the Thrillens State-Wide Tournament (Chicago), 1965 and 1966 ; and a 3.5" x 4.25" black and white photograph of two unidentified black women posing with an unidentified black man. By the end of the 1970s, according to the Smithsonian National Postal Museum, "African Americans held a higher percentage of executive positions in the Postal Service than any other minority group." This album nicely documents Montgomery s own rise through the ranks in the postal system that was attempting to fight against racial discrimination. Seller Inventory # 420
