Synopsis

After the conquest of Ethiopia in 1935, Mussolini boasted, `Italy has at last got an empire of her own'. In this book Haile Larebo examines the nature and scope of Italian colonial power in Ethiopia, and compares Italy's policy there with her administration of her other colonies. Dr Larebo shows that Italy's primary interest in colonies was for land on which her surplus population could be settled, and which could be used both as a source of raw materials for the homeland and as a protected market for Italian manufactured goods. He assesses Italy's land colonization programmes with particular reference to their consequences for Ethiopian social structures. The book is firmly grounded in extensive archival research, and makes an important contribution to our knowledge of Italian colonial policy and practice.
