In the number of viélims to the late calamlty, them: were many ftrangers, - amongl whom were probably fome, by whofe death, eftates ave fallen to heirs at a difiance. It being, therefore,of great importance to ex. Ten'd and improve the lift of the dead,and to remedy the extreme inacuracy of the fextonsj returns, Iernployed fuitable perfons to go thro'r the city and liberties, and make enquiry at every houfe, without exocption, for the names and occupations of the dead. The difobligx ing temper of fome, and the fears of others, that an, improper ufe would be made of the information they could have given, have in various inftances defeated my purpofe. Imperfect as the lift {till remains, I hope it will be found ufeful in removing anxious doubts. And conveying to perfons in different countries, thei melancholy information of the deceafe of relatives, which, but for fuch a channel of mommunioation, would in many cafes be difficult, if not impofiible to acquire for years to come.
