Miniature dolls' houses are cheaper to build, more portable, and easier to display than their full-size counterparts. And, it doesn't take any special techniques or tools to construct them. Two starter projects -- a corner room and a box room -- fine-tune your modeling skills for the four complete houses: a charming Victorian, a country-style thatched cottage, a double-depth Georgian town house, and a Tudor manor.

Reasons to build in 1/24th scale
My new book published in September was written in response to the very fast growing enthusiasm for the much smaller scale of 1/24th scale model houses.
The almost universal scale of 1/12th has dominated the miniaturist word for many years. I have written three previous books, published by the Guild of Master Craftsman Publications, on 1/12th scale, Making Tudor Dolls Houses, Making Georgian Dolls Houses and Making Period Dolls House Furniture (co-written with my daughter Sheila), these are still available.
The modeller who has constructed model houses in 1/12th scale will be all to aware that the sheer size and weight of this scale model strictly limits the number which can be collected in a typical home. In 1/24th scale this is a very much reduced problem as in this scale the volume of the model is reduced to 1/4 of the size of a model built in 1/12th scale.
A further advantage in this scale is the reduced building costs.
Many artisans are now producing, furniture, silver ware, pottery, fixtures and fittings, etc., in this scale and many of these are listed in the trade index at the back of my book.
For those of you who wish to construct your own furniture, I am presently working on a follow up book dedicated to furniture in this scale and hopefully this will be available next year.
Full instructions are given in the book for making doors, windows, brick effect, thatch and other roof coverings. Windows are door fittings are available ready made if preferred.
The book includes reduced plans for the models illustrated together with full instructions on construction. Full sized plans are however available, please e-mail at the above address.
I hope you enjoy my books.
