National Identities and Sociopolitical Changes in Latin America frames the social dynamics of Latin America in terms of two types of cultural momentum: foundational momentum, seen during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries with slave, gold, silver, and silk trading and the subsequent spread of money, goods, and people that established a network of exchanges throughout the Americas; and the momentum of global order in contemporary Latin America, which was largely affected by displaced peoples who, because of the foundational forces, found themselves and future generations of their families in a cross-pollinated Latino culture. As a result of existing institutional and geopolitical premises, the object of regional studies has been fragmented by political interests, nationalistic projects, and typologies of texts, which confine it to a rigid and reductive field of study. Mercedes F. Duran-Cogan and Antonio Gomez-Moriana aim to develop new theoretical and methodological paradigms capable of bridging gaps between previously disconnected fields of knowledge. In this text, a group of distinguished scholars from an array of disciplines approach Latin America as a complex, conflictive and interdependent totality, and address the interaction between all symbolic practices in a state of society.
