Gillows of Lancaster and London were among the leading furniture makers of the late 18th and 19th centuries with a vast output that catered for both the nobility, gentry and the growing middle-class market. They made much of the inlaid and satinwood furniture formerly attributed to Sheraton, Shearer and Hepplewhite. This work presents a selection of their principal furniture designs in over 300 illustrations. An introductory essay surveying the firm's history and assessing its significance is complemented by indexes of clients, craftsmen and furniture.
