Scotland now boasts 31 operational breweries, producing a remarkable 150 beers and lagers. This real beer boom comes in a country which already has a formidable brewing heritage. New archaeological research, based on the discovery of a 30-gallon ceramic pot at Skara Brae, suggests that brewing may have taken place on Orkney as early as the Neolithic era (around 3100BC). In more recent times the great companies of McEwan, Tennant and Younger were established in Scotland, while myriad smaller brewers have added their expertise and individuality to the range of beers available. Scottish beer has come a long way since the Stone Age, or even since the early 1960s, when Tennent’s famous ‘lager lovelies’ began to appear on the side of lager cans!
