The occupant of a Personal Chair in the Department of History at the University of Liverpool , he is the author of numerous works on Spain in the Revolutionary era, the Peninsular War of 1808-1814 and the Napoleonic Wars - including The Spanish Army in the Peninsular War (Manchester University Press, 1988), The Peninsular War: A New History (Allen Lane, 2002) and Napoleon’s Wars: an International History, 1803-1815.
