Este libro es un intento de observar de nuevo el Movimiento Moderno y volver a enmarcarlo según unos criterios más amplios. A diferencia de las historias canónicas de la arquitectura moderna, este libro exalta la profundidad y complejidad de ese movimiento, y resalta no tanto sus propósitos comunes como su espíritu explorador y la consiguiente diversidad creativa. En este estudio se intenta también hacer una aproximación más cercana a los edificios, pues muchas historias del pasado, al concentrarse en los estilos y los periodos, y en la historia de la cultura en general- han mencionado los edificios sólo de pasada. Esto hace que el enfoque de este libro sea diferente y que tenga además un marcado carácter didáctico, pues el libro va dirigido fundamentalmente a los estudiantes de arquitectura. Para ellos se ha adoptado el método del "estudio de modelos" o casos concretos (case studies), de manera que cada uno de los capítulos que componen el libro está dedicado monográficamente a un ejemplo singular; la excepción es el primer capítulo, que examina todo el conjunto de la colonia Weissnhof, como muestra de la variedad de enfoques entre los arquitectos modernos. La singularidad del libro está en la selección de los modelos, pues aunque se incluyen obras maestras indiscutibles (como la Bauhaus o la villa Saboya), también aparecen ejemplos menos habituales (como la hacienda Garkau, de Hugo Háring, o los hangares aeronáuticos, de Pier Luigi Nervi), a los que se unen edificios ya desaparecidos (como los almacenes Schocken, de Erich Mendelsohn). Y es que el autor quiere reivindicar el estudio de la obra Mendelsohn y de Bruno Taut porque, pese a ser dos arquitectos muy influyentes en su época, luego fueron relegados al olvido. The main condition-related issue is the previous owner's name written in black ink on the the ffep, which also has a small (<11mm) and faint circular ink imprint on it (possibly suggesting ex-library, but the only such indicaton). There is also a very faint outline/indentation of the same previous owner's name on the front card cover. This is not visible in the photo. The book is filled with b/w photos, plans, maps, etc but example photos of contents pages have not been taken so as not to risk potential weakening of the book's tight binding. xiii, 124/12 mo.
