Pappe. Condition: Gut. 2., überarb. und erw. Aufl. 336 S. : Ill., graph. Darst. First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 9.5 x 12.25 inches. Stapled softcover in wraps, recently bound into attractive, protective hard-cover binding. Marbled paper over boards; new endpapers. First blank page has small embossing, "Harvard College Observatory." Title page dated 1920. Copyright page dated 1920. Rubberstamp on tilte page, "Harvard College Library, Dec 21, 1920. Gift of University of Chicago Library." Another stamp below that, "Transferred to Astronomical Observatory." Published January 1920. 17 pages + 2 plates. A couple pencil notations in the margins. Very good condition, though perhaps slightly faded from age. Originally issued in gray paper wraps, with a half-title page. Those original wraps and half-title are missing from this copy. The plates are numbered III and IV, but they are the only two plates issued, and were originally numbered thusly. This is the original thesis positing that nebulae were, in fact, distant galaxies. Hubble's discoveries did more to change man perception of the universe & his place in it than any other astronomer. In the 20th century, Hubble's work stands beside only Einstein (and perhaps Watson & Crick); it fits comfortably on the shelf beside Kepler, Galileo and Newton.
