Not once in two and a half years was he allowed to see a human face.But what his kidnappers did not realise was that they had incarcerated a former Battle of Britain Spitfire pilot. Jackie had been shot down six times before horrific burns ended his combat missions during the war. He was determined not to give in now. His wife Sunnie, ignored by the British Government for most of his captivity, was alone in Muslim West Beirut, a city ruled by terror. She had no way of knowing if her husband was dead or alive. On the 24th September 1991, their torment ended with Jackie's release. He was malnourished, frail and unkempt, but alive. Yet the world Jackie and Sunnie had shared was gone forever. Both had been reshaped by their experiences. This book is a line from their favourite song and, in this frank and deeply moving book, the Manns describe how in their new home in Cyprus they are coming to terms with each other, with their separate pasts, and their future together.
