In original shrinkwrap that has been left on the slipcase but opened at the side to access the books. The books have very faint soiling but are tight with solid hinges and good tips. The textblock is clean with no writing, bookplate, or markings and not BCE, ex-library, or remaindered. No dust jackets, as issued. 40 and 44 pages. 6¼ x 9½" tall. Two facsimile reproductions of books self-published by Andy Warhol and his mother, Julia. ?25 Cats Name Sam and One Blue Pussy? was originally printed in 1954 in a run of 190 numbered, hand-colored copies, most of which were given as gifts to friends and clients. It is an homage to the 26 cats that lived with Warhol and his mother in their New York townhouse, all of which were named Sam (except for one, named Hester). Sixteen of them are depicted in the book. The first volume was a collaboration between mother and son, with illustrations by Andy and calligraphy by Julia, who accidentally omitted the letter 'd' from 'Named'. The error was left uncorrected as Warhol believed it added to the charm and quirkiness of the book. The second volume, ?Holy Cats,? was written and illustrated solely by Julia as a tribute to her beloved Hester on an ascent to heaven. Facsimile editions of the two books were published as a box set a few months after Warhol's death in 1987, this being the first U.K. edition published a year later.

(12 x 9 in.) This work originates from the Estate of Andy Warhol and thence, The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. '25 cats name[d] Sam, and One Blue Pussy' (circa 1954) was one of Warhol's first illustrated bound books. Produced with Seymour Berlin of Record Offset Corporation in New York and written by Charles Lionsby, Warhol illustrated 25 cats name[d] Sam, and One Blue Pussy with sixteen drawings of cats, each named Sam, and a seventeenth captioned 'One Blue Pussy'. The blotted line technique used by Warhol effortlessly articulates the fur coats and expressive faces of the animals. Warhol created his bound books to promote his commercial illustrations, sending them out to prospective clients. One such recipient, Diana Vreeland, then fashion editor for Harper's Bazaar and later Vogue, found her copy of Warhol's 25 cats name[d] Sam, and one blue pussy, to be 'Charming!' Feldman & Schellmann IV. 55B.
