Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY - 1ST EDITION HARDCOVER SIGNED BY ROALD DAHL This is a Borzoi Book, Published by Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. c1964, Good + Condition, no dust jacket. 162 Pages, binding fine with front-end paper slightly loose, light soiling on back book cover. Red Cloth Embossed Book Cover. The 5-line colophon indicates it is the first edition, second issue. Love hand printed and signed Roald Dahl in ink on the front mustard-colored book end paper. Diane P. Evans 10862 Vicenza Way Los Angeles, Calif. 90024 is ink stamped on the inside cover. This is the Bel-Air, California address where I lived with my parents, Creed M. Evans M.D. and Diane P. Evans, from 1965 until 1979. Carroll Shelby purchased this house from my father in the 1990s. Creed M. Evans M.D. was a WWII US Army Air Corps transport pilot prior to becoming a physician. He was stationed at times during the war in England. Roald was a WWII British Royal Air Force fighter pilot and later an intelligence officer. Their wartime experiences in England could be the reason for an association. Creed practiced medicine in Beverly Hills and Westwood, California in the 1960 s and 1970 s. While Roald was married to actress Patricia Neal, they spent time in the Los Angeles area where she worked doing both movies and television. But there is a second possible association with Diane Evans Father (my grandfather and namesake) Frank V. Phillips, ASC. Frank had a 40-year movie making career, starting as a motion picture camera film loader and ending as an Academy Awards Nominated (Disney s The Black Hole 1979) Director of Cinematography. Frank filmed scores of motion pictures and television series episodes over his career and could have worked on one or more productions in which Patricia had an acting role. Furthermore, Roald wrote and co-wrote motion picture screenplays, so Frank might also have had an association with him through working for the studios. I inherited the book when my father Creed passed away in 2015. It would make a nice addition to a collection of the first edition, autographed, Roald Dahl books. REASONABLE OFFERS CONSIDERED. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Joseph Schindelman, Faith Jaques, Michael Foreman and Quentin Blake, Sue Gent (illustrator). First Edition/First Printing. One of the most beloved children's stories of the 20th century, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl is a masterpiece of pure imagination. Willy Wonka's famous chocolate factory is opening at last! But only five lucky children will be allowed inside. And the winners are: Augustus Gloop, an enormously fat boy whose hobby is eating; Veruca Salt, a spoiled-rotten brat whose parents are wrapped around her little finger; Violet Beauregarde, a dim-witted gum-chewer with the fastest jaws around; Mike Teavee, a toy pistol-toting gangster-in-training who is obsessed with television; and Charlie Bucket, our hero, a boy who is honest and kind, brave and true, and good and ready for the wildest time of his life! First published in 1964, the dark humor and cheerful gruesomeness of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory immediately endeared the book to children, making it an instant bestseller. Rarely has a tale of morality ever been more deliciously entertaining to read, as Roald Dahl's story warns children and adults alike of the dangers of bad parenting, spoiling children, and self-indulgence. Dahl drew inspiration for the story from his own childhood. In the 1920s, chocolate makers in England would frequently send samples to school children in exchange for their opinions on new products. Two of the largest competing chocolate companies, Cadbury and Rowntree, would send spies posing as employees to discover the other's trade secrets. As a result, the companies became highly protective of their chocolate making process. It was a combination of this secrecy and the elaborate, often gigantic, machines in the factory that inspired the author to write his story. Roald Dahl's classic tale has been adapted into two major motion pictures, Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory (1971) and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005). In 1971, Dahl wrote a sequel, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, published in 1972. ARTIST EDITION 7" x 10" trim size. 220 Pages. Limited to 1250 copies. Full cloth, smyth-sewn binding with embossed cover. Dust jacket resembling Wonka's Whipple-Scrumptious Fudgemallow Delight candy bar wrapper (the only edition featuring the dust jacket). Over 60 pages of bonus content including deleted chapters, an alternate ending, manuscript pages and handwritten notes from early drafts. 1986 reply letter from Roald Dahl to Paul Suntup. SIGNED and INSCRIBED on the front free endpaper 'To Andrew and Rebecca [Highton]/Love/Roald Dahl/1977'. Additionally, Dahl has written 'American Edition' on the front pastedown. In a very good unclipped wrapper with chipping to the corners and spine tips. A little staining to the top of the rear panel. Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator: A near fine copy with one name [Highton] to reverse of the half title. SIGNED and INSCRIBED on the front free endpaper 'To Andrew and Rebecca [Highton]/Love/Roald Dahl/1977'. Additionally, Dahl has written 'American Edition' on the front pastedown. In a near fine unclipped wrapper with chipping to the corners and spine tips. A little staining to the top of the rear panel. A superb pair of books with a strong association to Dahl himself. Douglas Highton attended St Peter's prep school in Weston-super-Mare with Roald Dahl. As a friend, Douglas supported Roald during an incident at school, which Roald would never forget and later recounted in his autobiographical book 'Boy'. Douglas also appears anecdotally in the short story 'Lucky Break', and as a character in the short story 'The Swan'. The two stayed in touch over the years and Douglas would visit Roald at home in Great Missenden where Roald kindly signed many books for Douglas' grandchildren, Andrew and Rebecca.
