Neat gift inscription to the front end paper thereafter pages smooth and clean, unmarked, appearing unused. A very good and well preserved copy.

Condition: VG-Fine. 1st p/back ed. of 1983 ed?. unpag.prelims + 287 pp.; no internal faults bar hint of edge-browning, presumably common to all copies, covers clean and unworn, faint vertical spine creases caused by opening, so again presumably common to most copies. Originally this title was issued in 1969, but the present edition includes work of later date, or discovered after Bishop's death, so must in that sense be the prefered text. Chatto & Windus published a hard-back ed. in 1983. Apparently scarce in all editions. The book does have light corner wear, but is otherwise very nice and unmarked, except for a barely discernible area on the first blank blue flyleaf where something has been removed. A near-fine copy in a near-fine jacket with light aging/foxing, and tiny nick to the top left of the dust jacket at the spine on the front. The front endpapers and the edge of the text block have some foxing. Interior pages are clean and bright. 216 pp. 8vo. From the collection of publisher and poet, Kirby Congdon. This book is accompanied by a detailed index card, which Congdon kept, in painstaking detail, for every book in his collection of several thousand. Congdon was intermittently in touch with Bishop when their paths cross in Key West. Congdon was aligned with leading figures of the San Francisco Renaissance, Black Mountain College and the Beats, Congdon was central to the dissemination of their work, through his small presses; Interim Books, Cycle Press, and Crank Books. Chapbooks, broadsides, and pamphlets along with his legendary underground series Magazine, also elevated the work of many poets. His own poetry was published in almost every small press journal, The New York Times, Christian Science Monitor, and many anthologies. His Magazine, which ran to six issues, published the first iteration of several Bukowski, Micheline and Corso poems. A prodigious and widely published poet, Congdon was at the core of the literary and mimeograph revolutions of the 60s and 70s He corresponded regularly with hundreds of writers in the United States, Europe and South America, forming a vast network of contemporaries. His archive of correspondence, including copies of the letters he sent, provides a deep and unique insight into the concerns, ambitions, frustrations and activities of those who ushered a new zeitgeist and a pivotal cultural transformation in the United States.
