Enlarged from the author's "Microcosmus", first published at Oxford in 1621, and subsequently published as "Microcosmos". With an additional engraved title page "Cosmographie in foure books . The 5th edition corrected & inlarged by the author. London printed for Anne Seile over against St Dunstans Church in Fleetstreete 1669" (strengthened to margins and lined to verso with tissue). With the imprimatur leaf before "To the reader". Books 1-3, the two parts of book 4, and the appendix each have separate title pages, with imprints "printed by J. Macock, for Philip Chetwind and Anne Seile, MDCLXXIII." (books 1-2), "printed in the year M.DC.LXXIII." (book 3), "printed for Anne Seil, MDCLXXIII." (book 4, pt. 1), "printed in the year MDCLXXIII." (book 4, pt. 2, appendix), letterpress title in red & black, 3 folding engraved maps only of 4 (Europe, Asia and Africa, each dated 1663, LACKING map of the Americas), 20th-century half sheep (joints split and strengthened internally with cloth, spine worn, corners bumped with boards showing), 3 small stains on the Europe map, E2 and 3 in book 1 cut down and mounted, small ink burn holes in in N4 (loss of 2 letters) and T2 (loss of 1 letter) in book 1, marginal ink burn holes in V4 and 2B4 of book 1 and X4 of book 3, a few faint spots and occasional marks, minor stains to 2A1 book 4 part 1 and faint stain to the top margin of Q-S book 4 part 2, final leaf of index table strengthened to margins and lined to verso, folio, Wing H1694; Sabin 31655.

London: Henry Seile, 1652, Folio, Contemporary Panelled Calf, old reback, an attractive crisp copy. with Engraved Allegorical and Printed Titles, Four Folding Engraved Maps of the Continents: America; Asia; Africa and Europe, maps are trimmed close to the borders as usual. FIRST EDITION of Heylyn's"Cosmographie", an attempt to describe in meticulous detail every aspect of the known world in 1652. The geography, climate, customs, achievements, politics, and belief systems. It is the first work to describe in print Australia, and California, Terra del Fuego, and other territories in the New World and includes descriptions of the Arctic, Antarctica and the fabled North West Passage. The text describes exploration by Martin Frobisher, Drake and other early explorers. He objected to the name "America" as it placed undue glory on Amerigo Vespucci, and recommended "Columbana" or "Cabotia" as more indicative of the true discoverers, Columbus and Cabot. Peter Heylyn (1599 1662) was an English ecclesiastic and author of many polemical, historical, political and theological tracts. He incorporated his political concepts into his geographical books, Microcosmus in 1621 and the most important, Cosmographie (1657).  Heylyn was born in Burford, Oxfordshire, the son of Henry Heylyn and Elizabeth Clampard. He entered Merchant Taylor's School in March 1612. At 14 he was sent to Hart Hall, Oxford and, matriculated from Magdalen College, Oxford on 19 January 1616, aged 15. He was awarded BA on 17 October 1617 and was elected a fellow in 1618.He lectured on historical geography at Magdalen.Heylyn was awarded MA on 1 July 1620. He presented his lecture to Prince Charles, at Theobalds. He was incorporated at Cambridge University in 1621 and his lectures were published as Microcosmos: A Little Description of the Great World.  In 1633 he was licenced to preach and was awarded D.D. on 13 April,1633. He became a chaplain to Charles I and 1639 he became rector South Warnborough, Hampshire. He suffered for his loyalty to the king when, under the Commonwealth, he was deprived of his preferments. He subsequently settled at Abingdon, Berkshire (now Oxfordshire) and at the Restoration, he was made sub-Dean of Westminster, but poor health prevented further advancement.He married Letitia Highgate and had a large family. His monument is in Westminster Abbey. He was a prolific writer, and a keen and acrimonious controversialist against the Puritans. Among his works are a History of the Reformation, and a Life of Archbishop William Laud (Cyprianus Anglicanus) (1668). His Greek titles included Κειμηλιαέκκληδια&# 948;τικα (Historical and miscellaneous tracts a 1662 (1681) and Ἡρωολογια Anglorum; or, a help to English history 1641. Provenance: Viscount Gage.

Extra title page, four folding maps by Chetwind dated 1666. 14 x 9, full leather, 433, 139-266, 230; 562 (sic, 162) + table, covers rubbed, front hinge broken and very tender, scattered toning and marginal staining, maps ok: some minor staining to folds and edges, North America torn at one fold & tightly trimmed but it is an important map showing California as an island. A good, usable book.

Bookplates of John Peyto Verney and Robert John Verney, both Lord Willoughby de Broke, probably the 15th and 17th of that title. Contemporary speckled calf, five raised bands and red morocco label to spine. Extremities rubbed, headcap missing, joints split but binding still holding. London, Edward Brewster (et al.),   The five maps are generally (but probably incorrectly) attributed to Robert Morden (d. 1703), based on an early advertisement announcing this edition.   The map of America gives an interesting delineation of the western part of North America, with the Mississippi flowing into the Gulf of Mexico through Texas, California depicted as an island, a legendary inland sea, ?The Great Lake of Thongo or Thoya?, and a long curved imaginary coastline north from California.   References: ESTC T107951; Worms & Baynton-Williams, on Morden.

Heylyn?s Cosmographie was first published by Henry Seile in 1652. Heylyn (1600-1662) was a lecturer in historical geography, and churchman, appointed personal chaplain to King Charles I. The Cosmographie was the most substantial English geography of its day, an enlargement of the author?s Microcosmus, now expanded to near a thousand pages, with a suite of four maps of the continents, dated 1652.   The book was a success, and much reprinted. This seventh edition appeared under the joint imprint of several leading English booksellers and publishers.   The maps are now reprinted from replacement printing plates. The maps of Europe, Asia and Africa bear the imprint of Philip Chetwind, dated 1666, while the America is credited to Seile?s widow, Ann(e) (or Anna) Seile, and dated 1663.   The map of America derives from John Speed?s map from 1627; it is one of the earliest English maps of the Americas, naming many English settlements along the east coast, and also depicts California as an island.   Provenance: Head of illustrated title-page inscribed by a "[H-?] Goater", front blank with a Frances Goatier, both in an early hand; below another inscription "The Gift of my Cousin Goater to me Eliz.
