Hardcover. Condition: Good. Rafael Palacios (Maps) and Edward Steichen (Select (illustrator). First Trade Edition. xiv, [2], 559, [1] pages. Endpaper map. , Illustrations. Maps. Footnotes. Appendices, Glossary of Military Code Names. Index. Pages slightly darkened. Some wear to top & bottom of spine. Some soiling to cover. Dwight Eisenhower, during World War II, became a five-star general in the Army and served as Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in Europe. He was responsible for planning and supervising the invasion of North Africa in Operation Torch in 1942-43 and the successful invasion of Normandy in 1944-45 from the Western Front. After the war, he served as Army Chief of Staff (1945-1948), as president of Columbia University (1948-1953) and as the first Supreme Commander of NATO (1951-1952). Crusade in Europe is a book of wartime memoirs by General Dwight D. Eisenhower published by Doubleday in 1948. Maps were provided by Rafael Palacios. Crusade in Europe is a personal account by one of the senior military figures of World War II. It recounts his appointment by General George Marshall to plan the defense of the Philippines and continues to describe his appointment to, and execution of, the role of Supreme Allied Commander in Northern Europe. The book was dictated by Eisenhower to Kenneth McCormick of Doubleday and Joseph Fels Barnes, former foreign editor of the New York Herald Tribune. It was revised by Eisenhower's aide Kevin McCann. Derived from a Kirkus review: This stands head and shoulders above the other records of fighting men, in its simplicity, clarity, and the illumination it throws on the basic human relations of the men at the top. In his Normandy to the Baltic, Montgomery wrote:- "We are still too close to the events to attempt a critical analysis of the campaign." The same could be said of this book, but in spite of that General Eisenhower manages to convey a sense of objective surveying of the forging of victory over the Germans. This is the real inside story of the war in Europe, not in terms of jealousy and backbiting and gossip mongering, but in terms of its planning, its diplomacy, its action and its victorious ending. More than that, it is revealing of the greatness, the modesty, the statesmanship of one of America's truly great men. This is more than a soldier's story. It is the story of America's contribution to victory, of the splendid cooperation of the allies, of campaigns in Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and Germany. It is a tribute to the men who fought on various fronts under the most trying conditions. It is a picture of the destruction and horror of war. It is a plea for preparedness to forestall and prevent, if possible, a future war, or at least to be strong in case of war. It is an appraisal of what democracies can do when united. It is a fair analysis of the Russian colossus. It is the innermost story of a great Crusader and the book is worthy of the man.

Carbon copy typescript, 23 chapters. 2 vols. 4to. Carbon copy typescript of Eisenhower's memoir of the WWII European campaign, Crusade in Europe. With a note from Bill Robinson, Vice-President of the Herald Tribune, giving this typescript to Doug Black, President of Doubleday, the book's publisher. It was by Robinson's insistence that Eisenhower wrote these memoirs. The typescript differs little from the first published edition, with the following edits being the most significant: Chapters 16 and 17 in the typescript, "Pursuit" and "Battle of Supply" are arranged with slight modification in the published edition as "Pursuit and the Battle of Supply" (chapter 16) and "Autumn Fighting of Germany's Frontier" (chapter 17). Chapters 22 and 23, "Europe after V-E Day," and "Russia" are also re-arranged in the published edition as "Victory's Aftermath" (chapter 22), "Operation Study" (chapter 23) and "Russia" (chapter 24). The final paragraph of the typescript does not appear in the published edition, and is replaced by an eight paragraph discussion of the merits of democracy in facing the growing threat of Communism. After a gentlemen's agreement on Dec 30, 1947, Eisenhower began work on the first draft of Crusade in Europe, completing it March 29, 1948. This draft was finished July 4 of that year and a final typescript, now at Columbia University, was produced before the book was published in the fall of 1948. Provenance: Bill Robinson; Doug Black In black morocco-grained cloth binders. Some rust and small tears from paper clips at margins, else near fine Carbon copy typescript, 23 chapters. 2 vols. 4to.

First edition, early printing of General Eisenhower's wartime memoirs. Octavo, original cloth, illustrations and maps, including four double-page color maps of the European theatre and battlefields. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page, "For Arthur B. Tourtellot- with sincere admiration of the skill he displayed in bringing a visual story of the European conflict to the American people with best wishes Dwight D. Eisenhower" at half-title. Recipient's bookplate facing inscription. Arthur Bernon Tourtellot produced "Crusade in Europe" as a television series at CBS, based on Eisenhower's book; Eisenhower's inscription here acknowledges Tourtellot's key role in the adaptation. The television series included original World War II footage and narration closely adhering to Eisenhower's writing. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. An exceptional example with noted provenance. Five-star General Dwight D. Eisenhower was arguably the single most important military figure of World War II. For many historians, his memoirs of this eventful period of U.S. history have become the single most important record of the war. Crusade in Europe tells the complete story of the war as Eisenhower planned and lived it. Through his eyes, the enormous scope and drama of the warāstrategy, battles, moments of fateful decisionābecome fully illuminated in all their fateful glory. "Eisenhower gives the reader true insight into the most difficult part of a commander's life" (New York Times).
