Hardcover. Leather bound with decorative illustrations on cover. #697 of 1499 US copies. 1-150 pp. with many b+w illustrations. Originally published in Lyons in 1538, Holbein's Dance of Death has been reproduced many times since. However, despite the universal high praise and enthusiasm for this work, there has not beein a satisfactory edition for almost a century and there has been no edition available for many years. Holbein's celebrated designs to illustrate the Old Testament ("Holbein's Bible"), also included in this book, were first printed in 1538 at Lyons by Frellon, who probably also published the Dance of Death. Some woodcuts from the latter were used in the Bible. In fact almost all of the designs reproduced in this edition appeared at one time or another in the same works with at least some others. This is the first time they have all appeared together in their present form. Good, shows some signs of wear on spine, discolorationof ink on cover. Exlibrary with stamp on top text block, stickers on both endpages.
