It was the first transitional letter and marked the major step between the old style letter and the modern letter. Hall is best known as cowriter with Charles Nordhoff of the novel Mutiny on the Bounty. The six stories in Doctor DogbodyÕs Leg are set in a Portsmouth tavern called the Cheerful Tortoise, where a Royal Navy surgeon tells a series of stories about how he lost his leg during the Napoleonic wars.
