Half-Leather. Condition: Good. 2 volumes complete. Non uniform bindings (volume 1 is the 1824 edition, volume 2 is the 1831 edition), volume 1 Italian to English, vol 2 English to Italian. Vol 2 bound in smart looking half dark green leather with marbled covers and endpapers (inner front hinge loosened a bit, marbled paper on the covers renewed), volume 2 bound in an early 20th century black cloth with marbled covers (the text block is almost detached from the binding). The text is complete, vol 1 with some very neat small annotations in a few places, vol 2 with toning to the inside margin of the title and signature at the top title margin. The pages are bright, toning to the title in vol 1, some foxing to the title in vol 2, some browning to the fore-edge margin of the first couple of pages in vol 2(prefactory essay). No page numbers as usual for dictionaries.

Half-Leather. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No dj. 7th Edition. Two volumes bound in one, contemporary half-leather binding is shelfworn and powdery, the hinges are supple and the bvinding is robust. Red lesather title label in gilt is a smart feature, the gilt keylines are still clear on the spine, the plum coloured stipple cloth is in good order with a little sunfade. The text block is hard to fault, super clean and perfectly straight with hardly any waviness to paper. Hard to believe its nearly 200 years old, though it does have that lovely churchey smell and if you love old books you will think of that as perfume! Size: 8vo.

Bookplate of Colonel Vesey on both front pastedowns. Ink signatures on title-page include that of Col. Vesey. A typewritten label on vol. 1 front pastedown reads: "From The Library of Mrs. Elisabeth Vesey, 1715-1791. The First of the Blue-Stockings, the Friend of Laurence Sterne, Horace Walpole, Goldsmith, Gray, Sir Joshua Reymolds, Mrs. Montague and the Hostess of Dr. Johnson and the "CLUB". Guiseppe Baretti (1719-1789), Italian literary critic, lived in London and spent time with Samuel Johnson and his associates. This dictionary is one of Baretti's best-known works along with a dissertation on Shakespeare and Voltaire. Elizabeth Vesey (1715-1791) was a wealthy English intellectual who was credited with fostering the Bluestockings, a society of women which hosted informal literary and political discussions that Johnson and his companions were known to attend.
