Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. New York: Vanguard Press, 1929. First Edition. Lightly dusted or Very Good hardcover, in pictorial dustwrapper having small tears. Bibliophiliac occult romance with modern Arthurian associations, about a New York bookseller whose Fourth Avenue book store is transformed into "the everlasting loveliness that is Avignon." Dwyer was an Australian author and reformed convict who lived in America for some years, and who also wrote jungle fantasies, mysteries, weird tales and science fiction for pulp magazines, including a Lost Race adventure of the South Seas "The Spotted Panther" (1913). He lived quite the life so had much to draw from in his fiction. He has been called "a proto-blogger" because he sold subscriptions to letters mailed from all over the world providing true accounts of adventures almost worthy of pulp adventure tales. When WWII erupted he got caught in Europe, began writing anti-Nazi articles for French newspapers so that when Paris fell, he had to go into hiding until he could find passage out of Europe. [Bleiler Checklist, 1978; Bleiler Guide to Supernatural Fiction, 1983].
