The author's first (semi-autobiographical) novel. Nora Ephron (1941-2012) was an American author, screenwriter, playwright, journalist, film director, and producer. Heartburn (1983) is based on Ephron's marriage to and divorce from her then-husband, Carl Bernstein (b. 1944), an American investigative journalist. The story is about Rachel Samstat, a food writer, who finds out about the extramarital affair between her journalist husband, Mark Feldman, and a socialite, Thelma Rice. Actual recipes are sprinkled throughout the book which has been interpreted as a satire upon food writing and novel-writing itself. Ephron later wrote the screenplay for the 1986 film adaptation of the same name starring Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson. Throughout her career, Ephron also worked on other high-profile films. She co-wrote the screenplay for Silkwood (1983), wrote the script for When Harry Met Sally. (1989), directed and wrote the screenplays for Sleepless in Seattle (1993) and You've Got Mail (1998), and directed and co-wrote the screenplay for Julie & Julia (2009).

First edition of this humorous novel. Octavo, original half-cloth. Presentation copy, warmly inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For Stella - With my best wishes for a happy birthday and an absolute minimum of heartburn - Nora Ephron." Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket design by John Alcorn. Heartburn (1983) by Nora Ephron is a semi-autobiographical novel that blends sharp humor with emotional candor to explore themes of betrayal, identity, and resilience. Based on the breakdown of Ephronâs own marriage to journalist Carl Bernstein, the novel follows food writer Rachel Samstat as she navigates pregnancy and the discovery of her husbandâs infidelity. Ephronâs distinctive narrative voiceâ"wry, self-deprecating, and incisively observantâ"transforms personal pain into a compelling story that critiques gender roles, romantic idealism, and the emotional labor expected of women. By interweaving recipes with confessional prose, Ephron creates a unique narrative structure that underscores the connection between food, memory, and emotional survival.
