Hardback. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 1871. First edition. xxxii, 511pp. and 1 plate showing Swarcliffe Hall (we believe that there should be a second plate and a folding map, but these are not present in this copy). William Grainge (1818-1895) was an English antiquarian and poet, and a historian of Yorkshire. He also established a bookshop in Harrogate and published numerous books on local history and topography. The History of Harrogate and the Forest of Knaresborough is probably his best known work and treats the district formerly known as the Royal Forest of Knaresborough. In this work a detailed account is given of each place, from the earliest know times, chiefly derived from materials never before published. Pedigrees are given of the principal landowners in the district; and pains have been taken to collect notices of eminent individuals and families connected with the district. besides the political, civil, and ecclesiastical history of the district, sketches of the physical history and geology are given. As well as covering Harrogate, the book includes notices of Birstwith, Castley, Fewston, Hampsthwaite, Lindley, Norwood, Rigton, Scriven, Thruscross, and Weeton. The book is bound in the original brown cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some light soiling to the boards. The corners are lightly bumped and there is heavier bumping to the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean with browning around the margins of the title-page and the free endpapers and a little scattered light foxing within the book. a name has been written on the front free endpaper and there is a bookplate on the front fixed endpaper. PLEASE NOTE: This is a fairly heavy book and extra postage may apply for delivery outside the UK.
