Scottish born Pettie (1839-1893) excelled at painting heroic scenes from Scotland's history. His palette utilised a rich resonance of colour, and his art was known for its dash and vigour, the pictorial qualities taking precedence over the storytelling which had been the immediate concern of his predecessors. Prolific and industrious, he became one of the best known British artists of his day.

First edition. 3000 copies. This brown cloth is a variant to the usual binding which is olive green. No reprint has been recorded so it is assumed that both varients were from the first printing. - A biography of the 19th century Scottish painter. âA & C Blackâs Twenty Shilling series of colour plate books, published from 1901 onwards, brought the world into the home at a time when travel, especially overseas, was much more difficult than it is today.
