Cloth. Condition: Near Fine. None (illustrator). First edition. The very scarce first edition of John Hargrave's guide to the Kibbo Kift, a hiking, camping and crafting group with the stated aim of bringing about world peace. The Kindred of the Kibbo Kift was established in 1920 by John Hargrave, and aimed to encourage young people 'to seek health of body, mind, and spirit' through outdoor activities and fostered a belief in universal brotherhood without the nationalism and militarism of the Boy Scouts. This is the first edition of Hargrave's stated declaration of the aims of the group, with chapters discussing the founding of the group, the author's belief that the Women's Movement has no place in his organisation, its relationship to Christianity and religion in general, the relationship between 'regional patriotism and the national spirit'. The final section discusses the human spirit.A very scarce first edition, offering insight into an organisation who aimed to produce healthy and creative individuals to help the human race evolve into a society without war. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to back strip head and tail, otherwise externally excellent. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and generally clean, with only the odd spot to the first and last few leaves. Near Fine. book.

First Edition
First edition, first impression, of this first publication of the Kindred of the Kibbo Kift, written by "Head Man" of the Kindred, John "White Fox" Hargrave (1894-1982). This book was issued by Duckworth, but bearing the "Imprint of the Kincouncil", and is very scarce, with Copac listing only six copies in British institutions, especially so in the dust jacket. The Kindred of the Kibbo Kift Kindred imbued Baden-Powell's scouting movement with millenarian world-healing ambitions, drawing mystical beliefs from Frazer's Golden Bough and the writings of Aleister Crowley. Their members included several former suffragettes as well as photographer Angus McBean, folk-dance revivalist Rolf Gardiner (who interested his friend D. H. Lawrence in the movement and inspired Kibbo Kift qualities in Lady Chatterley's Mellors), and Roland Berrill who later founded Mensa. A more remotely involved "Advisory Committee" included H. G. Wells, Julian Huxley, Rabindranath Tagore, Maurice Maeterlink, and Havelock Ellis, and T. E. Lawrence is reputed to have permitted Kindred members to camp on his land. This is a very scarce document of a fascinating moment in British social history, which still exists in the form of the Woodcraft Folk, and inspired a 70s rock musical, two major exhibitions at London museums, and several recent books. Octavo. Original black cloth, titles to spine in gilt. With dust jacket. Spine ends and fore edge of front board gently bumped, the binding otherwise sharp, faint foxing to edges and endpapers, else internally crisp. A near-fine copy in the very good jacket, wear with light loss to corners, a little foxed, unfaded.
