This copy of Charles Lamb's final collection of essays opens with a memoir from William Macdonald, and is complemented by over 70 animated illustrations by successful Victorian illustrator C.E. Brock. Volume 2 of 12. First appearing in the London magazine between 1820 and 1825, Lamb's conversational essays were popular with contemporary audiences and are what he is best known for today. This collection was originally published a year before Lamb's death. Brock was a very successful Victorian book illustrator, who also illustrated for authors such as Johnathan Swift, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, and George Eliot. Ink inscription to verso of front endpaper reads 'A.W.A from G.M.L' Half calf over red cloth binding. Externally, rather smart, with some light rubbing to the boards and the spine, and a little discolouration to the rear joint. Internally, firmly bound. Foxed to the endpapers, but pages are otherwise bright and clean. Very Good Indeed. book.

Dent and Sons. Includes Last Essays of Elia, Essays and Sketches, Tales from Shakespeare, and the first volume of Letters of Charles Lamb. All of the volumes are illustrated by C.E. Brock, and prefaced by William MacDonald, who provides a memoir of Lamb in volume 2. The conversational tone of the Lamb's essays made him particularly popular throughout the 19th century, and the Last Essays of Elia contain essays such as The Superannuated Man written the year before his death. Tales from Shakespeare is was written by Charles and his sister Mary, and although intended for young people, the stories retain Shakespearean language. In the final volume in this collection, the reader is given the opportunity to read the epistles between Lamb and his literary friends Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Robert Southey, William Wordsworth, and William Hazlitt.
