Magazine / Periodical First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Elephant folio. Condition: Good. First Edition Later Printing. Combines 445 pages. Fascinating relic of the 1970s "Back to Land" movement, this oversized catalog contains numerous recommendations for everything you would need in order to achieve a sustainable lifestyle: tools, gardening supplies, book recommendations, and more. The amount of research the compiling of these catalogs must have required is mind-boggling! Cover depicts the dark side of the moon with "Evening, Thanks Again" underneath and original $5 cover price. CONDITION: This is a vintage item in used condition. Signs of wear and use to exterior covers, edges and spine. Some discoloration and staining to front cover, with obvious creasing and rubbing present. Spine is noticeably shelf-worn and torn, interior contents are thumbed. Age-toned interior, overall a good copy that is firmly bound. DESCRIPTION: FUNCTION: THE WHOLE EARTH CATALOG functions as an evaluation and access device. With it, the user should know better what is worth getting and where and how to do the getting. An item is listed in the CATALOG if it is deemed: useful as a tool, relevant to independent education, High quality or low cost, Easily available by mail. Catalog listings are continually revised according to the experience and suggestions of CATALOG users and staff. PURPOSE: We are as gods and we might as well get used to it. So far remotely done power and glory - as via government, big business, formal education, church - has succeeded to the point where gross defects obscure actual gains. In response to this dilemma and to these gains a realm of intimate, personal power is developing - the power of individuals to conduct their own education, find their own inspiration, shape their own environment, and share the adventure with whoever is interested. Tools that aid this process are sought and promoted by The Next Earth Catalog.

Soft cover. Condition: VG. First Edition Later Printing. The bible of the counterculture/environmental movement in the early '70s when the first Earth Day got people thinking about being green & sustainable. Increasingly scarce as the first hippies (Boomers) pass on. This is the FIRST EDITION, Eighth Printing (Aug.1972) of the Last Catalog, which combined the earlier Catalog & the Supplement, which were published alternatively since 1968. About 1/3 of the material in this Last Catalog is new. They really did think this one would be the last ("This is really the LAST Catalog."), but it would continue to be printed for a few years! In 448 pages, with a 1967 picture of the dark side of Earth's moon taken by Apollo 4 on front cover, with the word, "Evening, Thanks Again," underneath photo & $5.00 cover price. An extremely large (elephant folio) softcover with black & white decorative wrappers, this copy is in VG condition (we are also offering a Good- (minus) copy for less). This copy is exceptionally clean & well-preserved, with a tight, square ginding & some light creasing to front cover. Missing lower-outer corner of back cover. There is insect damage (white scraped spots) all over the outside, heaviest to spine & back cover: front cover just has a few spots! Pages tanned, heavier around edges, commensurate with paper quality & age. Our photos depict the Exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have! Same day shipping on all orders received by 2pm weekdays (Pacific time); later orders, weekends, & holidays ship very next business day. SORRY: NO expedited domestic or international shipping without substantial (at least double) postage increase.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Internally Very Fine, this copy is in Very Good+ condition overall due to a light rub on the back cover. At the height of the "hippie movement," the anti-war and psychedelic art movements, the March 1971 Last Supplement to the Whole Earth Catalog provided an escape from the quickly approaching future. It provided aspects of a kinder, gentler, non-automated world. It also imparted insight into the social and political conditions of the time along with information on environmental concerns that continue to this day. Introduced by an iconic Robert Crumb cover comprising all his classic characters assembled in a take-off on the Last Supper, this issue contains a group of Ken Kesey pieces on The Bible, I Ching, Mantras, and Martin Buber. Still more, there's a full-page ad for Abbie Hoffman's Steal This Book, Ellen Sanders' We Are Endangered Species, poetry by Wendell Berry and Allen Ginsberg, and many other authors and artists. The final page is an invitation to "an exclusive party to celebrate the demise of the Whole Earth Catalog" in San Francisco on June 11, 1971.

Large folio (14.5 x 11 ins); pp 448; illustrations throughout. Original pictorial card covers, rubbed along edges of the spine, corners creased with point of one lower corner knocked off. A VG+ copy. The WEC was an American counterculture magazine and product catalogue published several times a year between 1968 and 1972 by Stewart Brand. This is the British edition given over to accessing products and services in the UK. The magazine featured essays and articles, but was primarily focused on product reviews. The editorial focus was on self-sufficiency, ecology, alternative education, "do it yourself" (DIY), and holism, and featured the slogan "access to tools". Although WEC reviewed a wide range of products (clothing, books, machines, seeds, etc.), it did not sell any of the products directly. Instead, the vendor's contact information was listed alongside the item and its review. This is why, while not a regularly published periodical, numerous editions and updates were required to keep price and availability information up to date. Book.
