The 19 volumes of the Biographical Edition were published between 1903 and 1907, this one in 1906. CONDITION. Corners and edges somewhat scuffed but externally good for its age. Front hinge has a 1cm tear at its base; joints and hinges otherwise sound. There is a distinct crack between the first two gatherings, and some of the pages are creased at the top corner. The text block is otherwise tight and sound and the pages clean.

Printed by Bradbury, Evans, and Co. Probably issued between 1861 and 1874. Not a tight back so the joint is readily repairable. We have a further seven Dickens titles bound by Webb Hunt & Ridings.

Dickens' tale of the life and adventures of Nicholas Nickleby, a young man who must support his mother and sister after his father dies & featuring some of Dickens' most memorable characters. 825 grams.

First edition in book form, bound from the monthly parts starting from April 1838 to October 1839. 40 plates including the frontis. Contains 'visiter' for 'sister' on page 123 and 'latter' for 'letter' on page 160. Contemporary half-calf, marbled boards and edges. A little edge wear, but a nice copy overall. Some tanning to the leaves and slightly skewed from the trimming when bound. Illustrations by Phiz [11801, Hyraxia Books].

Leather-bound; hardcover; octavo (22.5 x 13.5 x 5 cm.); pp. xvi, 624. English text. Handsomely bound in full morocco gilt, signed "RAOM" in gilt to front turn-in; top page edges gilt; luxurious floral-patterned endpapers; with 39 engraved plates by H.K. Browne [Phiz]. Printed by Bradbury and Evans. Condition: VERY GOOD. Collated complete. Binding tight and secure. Spine lightly dulled, the covers with some trivial rubbing. Textblock largely clean, the plates lightly toned. Without previous ownership markings. A stunning copy and scarce thus. Notes: First edition bound from the original parts (the front wrapper of part II bound in at the front) with stab holes visible in the margins, and beautifully presented in a signed binding. All is as called for in Smith for the first state (including the errors on page 123 and page 160, and the imprint of Chapman & Hall on the first four plates). Nicholas Nickleby was Dickens third novel and was issued in monthly instalments between March 1838 and October 1839. An instant success, it both solidified Dickens as a social critic and marked his first of many romances. [Smith I, 5; Gimbel A 40; Podeschi A41 and Eckel pp 64-5].

Hard cover with green leather spine and corners; gilt titles within maroon frame on spine and 8 horizontal gilt lines; small tear to upper spine end, but no other significant cover wear; but unfortunately detached front board. Frontispiece is a picture of a young Dickens, 39 illustrations by Phiz, xvi, 624 pages quite clean printed by Bradbury and Evans, but browning/spotting of plates especially the reverse blank sides. Published in 1854 this later edition would be in very good condition but for the detached front board.

Condition: Good. Early edition. Dated 1848 on title page, and in new preface by Dickens for this edition. HB. Half black leather binding over marbled boards. Gilt title on red morocco panel and elaborate gilt decorations to spine (with 5 raised bands), and glit border lines to main covers. Spectacular marbled endpapers, and marbled page edges. xii, 499pp. With frontispiece engraving after painting by T. Webster, and 21 engravings in plates, many by Phiz. A Very Good copy. The covers are clean, very lightly rubbed to edges and marbling. Pages well-bound. No inscriptions. Main pages generally clean, but some of the plate pages are very heavily foxed as is often the case with Dicken's novels. Photos available.

Scuffed and bumped to extremities, hinges rubbed, gutters cracked, boards heavily rubbed, some dampstaining to front endpaper and frontis., the odd spot of foxing throughout and the odd light stain, else pp clean and tidy. Size: 8vo.

Green pebbled leather, ruled in gilt; five raised bands on the spine; titles also gilt. Clean text; 624 pages, with illustrations by Phiz. Pages are bright, unfoxed, and supple. Marbled endpapers and gilt edges. Tiny bit of rub at the tips and edges, else Fine. There is no publication date, but Quercus assumes circa 1880. A lovely book, and a pleasure to hold and read. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
