The 19 volumes of the Biographical Edition were published between 1903 and 1907, this one in 1906. CONDITION. Corners and edges somewhat scuffed but externally good for its age. Front hinge has a 1cm tear at its base; joints and hinges otherwise sound. There is a distinct crack between the first two gatherings, and some of the pages are creased at the top corner. The text block is otherwise tight and sound and the pages clean.

Printed by Bradbury and Evans. Condition: VERY GOOD. Collated complete. Binding tight and secure. Spine lightly dulled, the covers with some trivial rubbing. Textblock largely clean, the plates lightly toned. Without previous ownership markings. A stunning copy and scarce thus. Notes: First edition bound from the original parts (the front wrapper of part II bound in at the front) with stab holes visible in the margins, and beautifully presented in a signed binding. All is as called for in Smith for the first state (including the errors on page 123 and page 160, and the imprint of Chapman & Hall on the first four plates). Nicholas Nickleby was Dickens third novel and was issued in monthly instalments between March 1838 and October 1839. An instant success, it both solidified Dickens as a social critic and marked his first of many romances. [Smith I, 5; Gimbel A 40; Podeschi A41 and Eckel pp 64-5].

Green pebbled leather, ruled in gilt; five raised bands on the spine; titles also gilt. Clean text; 624 pages, with illustrations by Phiz. Pages are bright, unfoxed, and supple. Marbled endpapers and gilt edges. Tiny bit of rub at the tips and edges, else Fine. There is no publication date, but Quercus assumes circa 1880. A lovely book, and a pleasure to hold and read. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
