Er ist mit der Dramatikerin Kay Eldredge verheiratet und lebt als freier Schriftsteller in Bridgehampton, New York und Aspen, Colorado. 1998 erhielt Salter den PEN/Faulkner-Award. Die Washington Post setzte seine Werke auf eine Stufe mit Flannery O'Connor, Paul Bowles und Tennessee Williams. Er arbeitete auch als Drehbuch-Autor: 1969 Downhill Racer mit Robert Redford.
