Paperback. Condition: Good. First Edition. Wraps. 8vo. pp. xxii, 95. Original publisher's blue wrappers lettered black on covers. A duplicated typed speech loosely inserted 3 pp., recto only, entitled 'Speech at the Bar' addressed to Mr Speaker by Anthony Wedgwood Benn in which he firstly says that 'he makes no apology for wishing to remain a Member of Parliament', secondly he expresses his thanks for 'the unfailing support of those who sent me to this place to represent them', and thirdly he states, 'Whatever Parliament may ultimately decide about it I am asking that the Stansgate peerage which was created for a special purpose, having now served that purpose, should be allowed to lapse completely and for all time Ğ preserving no privileges for the future.' He continues by saying his whole family is in total agreement with this. Also loosely inserted a House of Commons Guinea Club dinner menu with a list of prestigious guests dated July 26th, 1960, rough handwritten note on back. Anthony Wedgwood Benn (1925 Ğ 2014) known as Tony Benn fought to renounce his title which he inherited on his father's death as he wanted to remain an MP. His campaign succeeded with the Peerage Act of 1963. Marking in biro to one paragraph of the text. Edge of upper wrapper very slightly marked, covers of dinner menu rather grubby, otherwise very good. Light wear otherwise close to very good.
