Covers rubbed, joint with tear (about 5cm), one clasp missing, endpapers stained, "family register" with handwritten entries in ink, margins partially with light foxing. Altogether good copy with beautifully preserved plates.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Believed to be c. 1865. Large family bible with black decorative leather boards, brass corners and gilt edged pages. Comprehensive notes to the text throughout. This bible has been professionally restored with the insertion of a new plain leather spine with a red title label adhered. It has new front and rear cream end papers. The black leather boards have been cleaned. In addition to the title page there is a colour one opposite the black & white frontispiece. PLATES: This bible has a wealth of full page illustrations, 15 full page colour plates and 17 black & white steel engraved ones. Each has a clean paper guard with minor edge wear on a few. In addition there are 2 full page colour maps and a decorative page titled 'The Lord's Prayer in 14 languages'. All colour plates show P. R. Morris in the base right corner. This illustrator is Philip Richard Morris, 1836 - 1902, who was a highly regarded English artist at the Royal Academy. All illustrations, colour and the steel engraved ones are in particularly good condition. PAGES: c.1270 pages of text. 15 page Preface; 6 page decorative Family Register, not filled in; Old Testament, 915 pages; New Testament, 293 pages; Chronological Index, 8 pages; Biblical Cyclopaedia, 34 pages; Pslams of David in Metre; Concordance to Old & New Testaments. 103 pages. The last 5 pages of the Concordance have edge wear and on the last page there are lines of discolouration from clear adhesive tape which is no longer present and a few words are not showing. DATE: Believed to be c. 1860. CONDITION: All pages are securely bound in. Bright, clean unmarked text throughout with no inscriptions. Background notes are in two central columns on each page and at the base of each page. The brass clasps are no longer present. The bible is in a very tidy state, having a clean, attractive appearance with its decorative brass corners and tooled leather boards which have gilt still showing. There is no brown spotting through the text and only a very few pale ones showing elsewhere. The only fault to the main body of the bible iis where there is edge wear to the last 5 pages of the Concordance which includes a 2"/ 5cm tear to the side edge of page 93 and there is evidence of an old tape repair to the last page as already stated. These problems were caused by the rear board coming free before the bible was repaired. WEIGHT: 6.46 kg unpackaged. Reasonable international rates. This bible can only be sent with tracking. Featuring a charmingly illustrated Family Register, which is yet to hold any entries. Adorned with twenty-five plates, ten of which are coloured- including a decorative title page. With A concise Biblical Cyclopaedia: a Dictionary of Sacred Biography, Natural History, Ancient Geography, Eastern Antiquities, and Theology to the rear of the work. John Eadie was a Scottish theologian and biblical critic. His publications were connected with biblical criticism and interpretation, some of them being for popular use and others more strictly scientific. To the former class belong the Biblical Cyclopaedia, his edition of Alexander Cruden's Concordance, his Early Oriental History, and his discourses on the Divine Love and on Paul the Preacher; to the latter his commentaries on the Greek text of St Paul's epistles to the Ephesians, Colossians, Philippians and Galatians. Rebound in a full calf binding with gilt lettering to the spine. Externally, sound, with only some very light rubbing in places. Condition very good, the binding has been professionally restored at some point and is sound with new end-papers, the leather is a bit dry and cracked on the spine and the binding is a bit rubbed at the extremities, still very attractive. Internally in suprerb condition, there are a few spots to the edges of the preliminary pages, the Concordance is toned, other than this the pages and plates are incredibly clean throughout. There are many many superb colour and sepia toned illustrations, including reproductions of works by the old masters, maps etc. There is a splendid extra engraved title page, main title page printed in red and black, colour pages for family register and family portraits, a sheet in red of the Lord's prayer in 14 different languages, photographs of scenes from the Holy Land, tables of Weight and units of measure time etc. Chronological Index, Biblical Cyclopaedia - Concordance etc. There are a few entries for the Kendrick family from 1890-1938 in the family register. At the rear of the Bible is The Psalms of David in Metre, Allowed by the Authority of the General Assembly of the Kirk of Scotland. Bound in full black leather, the cover is dramatically ornamented in a sculped geometric inlay titled in gilt and decoration. Solid, heavy-duty brass clasp closures at the foredge keep the foredge tightly closed, yet easily opened without much effort. Hubbed spine bears four raised bands with gilt lettering and blind debossed ornamentation. All edges are a striking gilt. Illustrated throughout with plate engravings, some in sepia monotone, and others of which are full color chromolithographs, all protected by a tissue leaf. Frontispiece and first title page are stunning and vividly beautiful in full color. A family register for parent's names, marriages, children's names, deaths and a family portrait gallery in which to affix family photographs are included, and have yet to bear any written information. Contains several indexes, The Psalms of David in Metre, as well as "A Concise Biblical Cyclopaedia: A Dictionary of Sacred Biography, Natural History, Ancient Geography, Eastern Antiquities and Theology" at the back. xv, [8] 1211 pp., [5] 34 pp., 60 pp. This Bible is quite large at 13" x 10.25" x 3.5" and weighs over 12 lbs. CONDITION: This copy is in beautiful condition. VG+ as it does show some wear, particularly around the edges and some on the spine. The leaves have beautifully and lightly toned, and are free from any marking or annotation. Illustrations are detailed and vivid. Virtually free from foxing except within endpapers and introductory pages. Brass closures are remarkable.
