Softcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Very Good 9 " x 8 1/2". Glossy black perfectbound pictorial wraps featuring a full-color reproduction of the Rajput style, Mewar School miniature, "Offended Heroine: From a Rasikapriya Series" to the cover, bottom fore edge creased affecting the first free endpaper, tips showing some wear, and minor scuffing to covers, else clean, tightly bound, and unmarked throughout. This catalog was produced in conjunction with a exhibition of the same name organized by the Newport Harbor Art Museum in Newport Beach, California and shown January 20 to February 20, 1976. It then traveled to Arizona State University, the Colorado Springs Fine Art Center, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the University of California Art Galleries in Santa Barbara, and the de Saisset Art Gallery & Museum at the University of Santa Clara in California. This collection of Indian paintings was amassed by William Theo (Theophilus) Brown (1919-2012) and Paul Wonner (1920-2008) who met at Berkeley after World War II, and on a trip to the R.E. Lewis Gallery became enamored of Rajput paintings. They would eventually become two of the only American collectors whose accumulated works rivaled those counterparts in Europe. Both Brown and Wonner were celebrated artists in their own right, associated with the Bay Area Figurative Movement. This catalog includes an Introduction, Foreword and Acknowledgement by Curator Betty Turnbull and LACMA Curator of Indian and Islamic Art Pratapaditya Pal. Unpaginated, includes 49 numbered plates, four of which are in full-color, all of which include a short overview of the myth or moment being represented. For students, scholars and novices of Indian mythology, religion, art, philosophy, and culture.
