For Pharmacy, Hirst's restaurant in Notting Hill Gate in the late 1990s, Hirst himself designed wallpaper based on the pharmaceutical giant Merck's handbook endpapers, showing pills and describing them. Merck's objected, meaning Hirst withdrawing it as an artwork of wallpaper but had already plastered the restaurant with silver and gold versions, which remained. The piece for sale, protected by UV perspex, has small rips and damage, as well as thin pieces of plaster where the sheet was scraped from the wall of the restaurant. Later, for the Sotheby sale in 2004, limited editions of the wallpaper were produced. This, the original, is rare thus. Accompanied by the original Sotheby's catalogue from the Damien Hirst Pharmacy Auction in 2004. A near fine book complete with the full set of stickers intact. In this auction, Hirst sold the art work effects from the Pharmacy Bar and Restaurant in Notting Hill, London; a symbol of Cool Britannia in the 90s. Rare.

For Damien Hirst's Notting Hill Gate restaurant in London, he designed wallpaper based on the Merck Company's pharmaceutical products. Those first versions, in bronze and silver, which were used to decorate the restaurant, used the actual trade names. Merck objected to this appropriation of their trademarks. Hirst dropped his plans for other branches of The Pharmacy, and the original one closed in 2004. New versions in silver and gold printed in 2004 substituted Biblical passages for the trade names. At the ensuing Sotheby's auction of the restaurant's custom-made furnishings designed by Hirst, a set of 20 rolls of the sanitized silver version sold for £15,600 (nearly $30,000 at the time). Width: 53.5 cm / 21-1/8 in. Length: about 1000 cm / 394 in. Repeats are about 18 in / 46.7 in. If that is correct, there should be a total of about 22 panels totalling nearly 58 square feet. Since this roll remains untouched in its original shrinkwrap, I am unable to confirm these figures. This copy came with the following information that I have been unable to verify: "Limited Edition 1000, 5-color gravure printing, 1st issue." As new, from the collection of Helene Verin.
