Full information where further reading and visiting is available. ## ## PICTURE POSTCARDS: When the Austro-Hungarian Post Office introduced the first plain postcards on October 1 1869, the success of this new method of correspondence was immediate. Other countries quickly followed the Austrian example, and the first British postcards were issued on October 1 1870. Postcards were cheap, useful and convenient at a postage rate of a halfpenny, half the current inland letter rate. Enterprising stationers soon began marketing postcards with decorative designs and vignettes. However, picture postcards were delayed in Britain by the insistence of the Post Office that privately printed postcards would be liable to the penny rate of postage. After this restriction was removed In 1894 the number and variety of postcard designs increased. Collecting postcards became the most popular of the collecting hobbies, with its peak years between 1904 and 1914. The hobby fell out of favour between the two world wars, but since the 1970s it has enjoyed a remarkable revival. This book recounts the history of picture postcards, illu>trates some of the most interesting types and provides useful suggestions for anyone planning to form a collection.## ## Shire Books by Bloomsbury Publishing, a book publishing company based in London, England, and formerly by Shire Publications Ltd. and Osprey Publishing.
