Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. FIFTY HAND COLOURED AQUATINT PLATES, EACH WITH AN ACCOMPANYING LEAF OF TEXT First edition, 4to, in full black morocco, spine gilt titled, lower and fore edges untrimmed, title leaf, contents leaf, & 50 hand coloured engraved plates, each with a guard leaf and a descriptive leaf, the text printed on rectos only, edges of binding rubbed, some foxing and soiling, edges uncut, upper hinge weak. (243*175 mm). (Colas 2357. Hiler p16. Lipperheide 987). The occasional watermarks range from an unclear date prior to 1810 up to 1821 (the latter on guard leaves only). The subject of these delicately coloured engravings range from the King to a chimney sweep, from a Knight of the Garter to a Billingsgate fish woman; so not only the costumes but the many strata of English society are depicted. William Alexander was an artist and drawing master who became the first keeper of the prints and drawings at the British Museum. These plates are generally not as picturesque as those of Alexander's similarly titles and almost simultaneous costume books on China, Russia, and Turkey; but the ceremonial and military outfits can be rather spectacular.

Large 8vo, 50 hand-coloured aquatint costume plates with letterpress facing, title page and contents leaf preceeding, the plates covering a range of social types of the late Regency period, and are based on Pyne's larger format plates in his Costume of Great Britain of 1804, bound in contemporary straight grained dark green morocco, the sides with central oblong panels in gilt and blind enclosing diagonal and floral design, decorative gilt borders to the boards and and blind and gilt decoration to the spine, all edges gilt, drab green endpapers, rubbed to all edges and joints, a few scuff marks to the boards, internally with occasional light foxing but generally very fresh and clean, FIRST EDITION THUS; a remarkable and unusual unsigned morocco binding of the period, clearly English; but whilst central circular or diamond decoration is quite usual at this period, the oblong design here, somewhat recallling ironwork of the period is less often seen. This would be an excellent example of English Regency binging were it not for the rubbing and scuffing which has given it a well-used external appearence, though it is clean inside.

The book on English costumes is the only one of the five that was probably not illustrated by Alexander, though the format is consistent with that of the other four. According to Prideaux and Martin-Hardie this volume was "admirably drawn and hand-coloured in a style so like that of Atkinson that they may well be accepted as his work" (Martin-Hardie, p. 154). William Alexander (1767-1816) was the first keeper of Prints and Drawings in the British Museum, who had gone out as junior draughtsman with Lord Macartney's embassy. "Alexander was an excellent draughtsman, and his illustrations are of considerable value" (Prideaux, p. 250). Colas 75 and 78. Hiler, p. 16 (lists all five under Alexander). Lipperheide 832; 1351; 1423; 1527-28. Prideaux, p. 325 (lists all five under Alexander). HBS 67827. $7,500.
