First edition. His second Pre-Raphaelite study, following his 1896 his work on Rossetti's teacher and Ford's grandfather, Ford Madox Brown. Published in the "Popular Library of Art" series (later printing copies are in the "Masters of Painting" series). In an unrecorded, variant binding of brown paper boards with 3 pages of ads at rear, as called for. Harvey A10 calls for limp green leather and notes copies in coarse green cloth and smooth red cloth but makes no mention of copies with paper boards. However, we presume most copies were in various covers other than leather, as the publisher's ads for this series are headed "Boards gilt, 1s. net; green canvas and red cloth gilt, 2s. net; limp lambskin, 2s. 6d. net. Several titles can also be had in the popular Persian yapp [i.e., limp leather] binding, in box, 2s. 6d. net each." Cover edges lightly rubbed, gilt on spine dulled but readable, and front cover gilt medallion shows slight discoloration, still very good.
