A complete reprint of the First Edition and the combined Third, Fourth and Fifth Eidtions, with an appendix containing Fitzgerald's Prefaces and Notes. Edited with an Introduction By Louis Untermeyer. This 149 pg copy comes in a red, hard slip cover. The cover is red and black and is very fine. Inside every page is illustrated with beautiful full color illustrations interspersed throughout the book.

Gilt arabesque decoration, featuring peacock and urn on cover, along with original owner's names embossed in matching gilt: "Sarah and Burl Bryant". Gilt titles on spine. There is a significant break at the bottom of the gutter on the front board, about two inches in length. Corners are bumped and there's a small loss of leather at the top of the spine. There is vertical play to the spine, but it remains straight, and solid-feeling. There is a slight crease on page 95/96 and the rear free end paper. All 96 pages free of marks, with minimal uniform toning. Profusely illustrated with multiple b&w images on each textual page. Plus 12 tipped-in full color illustrations, each in excellent condition.

Covers with wear all over and obviously water damaged with loss of surface colour. Unpaginated with pages have stain to lower corners lessening towards back. Text and tipped in plates not affected. Presumed first edition thus, hardcover in red cloth with gilt titling and decoration, publication date is not listed, lacks the first free end page, has a touch of bowing to the covers, faint waving to the head and tail edges of the text block, very slight bumps to the spine ends, a touch of shelfwear to the cover edges and corners, and some mild sunning to the spine and cover edges, otherwise a solid, clean Good+ copy in a Near Very Good box, which has light bumps to the corners with the boards starting through at the corners of the lower tray, some wear along the seams with a couple short splits to the edges of the upper tray, slight sunning around the edges, and mild rubbing to the panels. An embroidered silk bookmark is laid in.

This with 12 color tipped in illustrations, 46 mounted black and gold illustrations and internal illustrations in black and white, 272 pp. This copy is 10" tall. Covers are flesh toned. There must have been some customization for buyers even for this trade edition as the verso of the title page has a Christmas 1930 presentation. There is some uneven fading to the covers and a bit of rubbing to the spine extremities and back cover. All in all quite a pleasant example of Pogany's work.

Normal wear and marks apply consistent with use and age. Printed in Great Britain by R & R Clark, Ltd, Edinburgh. Twelve colour illustrations, along with a host of other decorative images, intertwined amongst the verse. Omar Khayyam was a Persian poet of the eleventh and twelfth centuries who was an astronomer of great scientific acquisitions and accomplishments. His Rubaiyat is or are, for the word is plural, a collection of, in all, genuine and doubtful, some eight hundred and odd quatrains of verse dealing with subjects extremely difficult to label or ticket under one head, though the patient "philosophy" may perhaps accept them under her wings. These verses met the eye of Edward Fitzgerald (1809-83) a man of Irish extraction but English birth and (mainly) residence, who, at Cambridge, fell in with a group of unusually distinguished comrades, including Thackeray and (later) Tennyson, as well as, later still, and not in connexion with Cambridge, Carlyle. Fitzgerald was a man of independent though not large fortune, and in one sense, if not in all, of the most independent character possible. Just a wonderful book, that is full of fascinating insights, verse and rhymes.
