Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. AUBREY BEARDSLEY (illustrator). FIRST EDITION & FIRST PRINTING. The Original Dustjacket houses this incredibly beautiful book. It is remarkably complete with a few faults; there are a few closed edge tears, the largest of which is on the back panel top edge, between the [t] and [r] on Illustrated. It has been mended with cellotape. It is soiled in general with a few small areas of chipping to the extremities. Still remarkable in any condition as it is 94 years old and has stood the test of time.It is now housed in a removable plastic archival sleeve to protect in the future. There is no price on the dustjacket. These books were sold [see above] at Macy's [New York] for 65 cents. The boards are hardback quarter bound red cloth covered boards with black cloth spine and seven gold vertical lines near the spine edge front and back and faded gold lettering on the spine, with beveled edges. Its a sturdy book. The dustjacket has done a fabulous job and kept the boards incredibly clean and firmly bound to the page block. Brown slightly ribbed end-pages front and rear, and on the first end-page is a small pasted in image of Oscar Wilde on his deathbed. Its an incredibly evocative image. This is the great man himself resting in eternal peace. Flowers adorn him. Little rubbing to the end-page around the image. The pages are rough-cut to the front edge and the paper itself is of a good quality. It is quite luxurious. After the copyright details it states: SALOME - A tragedy in one act: translated from the French of Oscar Wilde, with sixteen drawings by Aubrey Beardsley. The next page depicts an image of: The Original Cover Design, of a peacocks feathers. This is in black and white and I think the original was in green with a gold gilt design. The following page is: THE PERSONS OF THE PLAY. [page 9] - Page 11 gives you: CAST OF THE PERFORMANCE OF [SALOME], REPRESENTED IN ENGLAND FOR THE FIRST TIME. - NEW STAGE CLUB - SALOME BY OSCAR WILDE, MAY 10th and 13th, 1905. Page 12 and 13: Depicts the advertising for Richard Straus premier in The Königliches Operahouse in Dresden in 1905. The opera is famous (at the time of its premiere, infamous) for its "Dance of the Seven Veils". The final scene is frequently heard as a concert-piece for dramatic sopranos. There are several pages of notes on Salome. A letter to The Times from Oscar Wilde and several very interesting historical references of Salome being banned in the UK until 1907. Then, on page 25, the tragedy begins. Contains 120 printed pages with sixteen drawings by Aubrey Beardsley, to accompany the play. Apart from faint occasional foxing, the pages are beautifully clean throughout. - END - RAPID DISPATCH.
