Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition, Illustrated Edition. "On Sledge and Horseback to the Outcast Siberian Lepers" by Kate Marsden. 1892 1st American edition; Cassell Publishing Company; New York. This edition features a frontispiece portrait of Marsden with a map of her route (with a tissue guard), as well as numerous illustrations, photographs, maps, and facsimile documents. Decorative floral end papers. From a review: "Kate Marsden, the youngest of eight children from a poor family, was a highly committed nurse. She cared for soldiers in the Russo-Turkish War in 1877-78, and undertook missionary travels to various countries, but she was especially concerned about the plight of those suffering from leprosy. This volume describes her remarkable journey to Siberian leper colonies. At first she travelled by sledge with a friend, but continued alone on horseback, facing appalling weather conditions with her customary courage. Her commitment to leprosy sufferers led her to found the St. Francis Leprosy Guild in London in 1895, and she organized a leprosy hospital in the remote Siberian town of Vilyusk in 1897." The chapters are as follows: Clearing the Way; First Experience on the Road; Mostly Mishaps; Clanking Chains; Tarantass Traveling; Nearing the Lepers; Yakutsk - The Province and the People; First Experiences of the Two Thousand Miles on Horseback; Miseries of the Lepers; Among the Lepers; Through Fire; Finish of the Two Thousand Miles' Ride; Help for the Lepers; Results and Prospects. Condition: Tiny cloth tear at the top-right corner of the front cover. The gilt lettering at the bottom of the spine has partially faded. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Nice interior - the pages are lightly age-toned and mostly clean with only an occasional light smudge and foxing spot here and there. Page 27 has a 1" tear at the top edge. The lower-outer corner of contents page xiii has torn away. Overall the book is in Very Good condition.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. London. The Record Press Limited, No date although later editions have a gilt vignette to the front and this does not. May or may not be a first edition. Hardcover. Very Good . Boards are a little grubby softening and wear to the spine ends. Uncut pages. Nice toght binding and clean contents. Gilt titles to spine are a little darkened. A account of the journey made by Kate Marsden to visit lepers in Siberia. With two double-page facsimile letters to the front, detailing Queen Victoria's interest in the works of Marsden. A second three page facsimile letter from Countess Tolstoy in French with English translation in the appendices. Illustrated throughout with twenty-five plates, including a full-page map. Frontispiece of Queen Victoria. 14 plates. Kate Marsden (1859 1931) was a battle-hardened nurse who had cared for the wounded during the war between Russia and Turkey in 1878. Yet even those wartime experiences had not prepared her for the gruelling equestrian journey she undertook in 1891. Having learned of the horrific conditions under which Russian lepers were forced to live, the resolute nurse sought out the imperial assistance of Englands Queen Victoria, as well as the Empress of Russia, then set off to ride thousands of miles across the wilds of Siberia. The nurse, turned equestrian explorer, was intent on bringing medical relief to Russias forgotten wounded, as well as finding a herb which was allegedly a cure for leprosy. After having completed one of the most difficult equestrian journeys of the late 19th century, Marsden returned to England where the intrepid Long Rider became one of the first women to be elected a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. An interesting selection of period advertisements related to the medical field at the rear.

K. Marsden war "Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society and a member of the Royal British Nurses Association, and the Russian Imperial Red Cross Society".
