Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. First Edition. Sixth impression of the true first edition, published just four months after the first impression, which was in August 1933. The book went into five more impressions in 1933, culminating with this one in December 1933, as stated on the printer's page. All these impressions were printed on good quality paper, although this impression uses slightly thinner paper than the first impression (a copy of which we also have listed on ABE Books) and is consequently in a slightly thinner binding. This copy is unusual in that it is in near fine condition. ***Near fine in red cloth-covered boards with black titles to the spine. The boards are clean and generally unmarked, except for a small area of rubbing at the tail of the spine where the surface cloth covering has been worn away. The spine is slightly faded, as to be expected after 90 years, but far less than is usually found. The binding is square and tight, with no reading lean and no sign of any splitting to the fragile cloth, or to the hinges. Corners sharp. Page block edges really clean with none of the usual foxing. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions, and no annotations. Unusually, there is none of the usual offsetting to the endpapers, and virtually no internal foxing. Pages clean. No dustwrapper. ***203mm x 140mm. 661 pages including author's acknowledgments and foreword dated May 1933 to the fore, plus 'The War Generation: Vale, VB. 1933' printed poem at the back of the book. ***Contents: Foreword, Part I. Ch I. Forward from Newcastle; II. Provincial Young-Ladyhood; III. Oxford versus War; IV. Learning versus Life; V. Camberwell versus Death. *** Part II. VI. "When the Vision Dies---"; VII. Tawny Island; VIII. Between the Sandhills and the Sea; IX. "This Loneliest Hour". *** Part III: X. Survivors Not Wanted; XI. Piping for Peace; XII. "Another Stranger". ***Sixth impression of the true first edition, published just four months after the first impression - this copy is in fantastic near fine condition, with the only real fault being the small patch of rubbing on the spine. First and early impressions of "Testament of Youth" are very hard to find now. This is a superb copy. Of interest to collectors of Vera Brittain, British social history and the First World War. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Testament Of Youth, Vera Brittain, Victor Gollancz Ltd, 1933, First Edition First Impression Rare and sought after as a first impression. Adapted for film in 2014, acclaimed as a classic for its description of the impact of World War I on the lives of women and the middle-class civilian population of the United Kingdom and as a book that helped "both form and define the mood of its time", this is the memoir of the British nurse and activist, Vera Brittain. There is a neat owners name to the front end paper. There is a small Times Book Club sticker to the rear of the back board. In good condition, the (variant) binding is straight and tight and the lettering on the spine is quite bright. There are marks to the front board, two indentations to the fore edge of the front board, a small indentation to the top edge of the front board, a small nick to the top edge of the spine, two small nicks to the bottom edge of the spine, marks and sunning to the spine and marks to the back board. The toned end papers and pages are free from tears. There are marks to the fore edge and a mark to the edge of the bottom edge. Will be dispatched, fully insured, carefully wrapped in bubblewrap and a cardboard box.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First American Edtion. Second printing of the first American edition, published one month after the first impression, with 'Reprinted, September 1933' stated on the printer's page. The book was first published in the UK by Victor Gollancz in August 1933, and also reprinted in September 1933. ***Near fine in scarlet cloth-covered boards with red titles on black panels to the spine and front board. The boards are clean and unmarked. No bumps. No creasing. No tears to the cloth. Top edge of page block clean. Fore-edge of page block untrimmed, as is usual for American editions. Very light sporadic foxing to the fore-edge. The spine colour looks to be just very slightly faded. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions. No creases or tears. Pages clean with no foxing. Spine tight. ***In a near fine original dustwrapper, which has been corner price-clipped. The dustwrapper is remarkably fresh and clean, with just the slightest of wear to the extremities. Just a few small nibbles and nicks to the edges. The back panel is very slightly marked, being a white background. The spine of the dustwrapper is, very surprisingly, completely unfaded, even though it is a very light-sensitive red colour. No significant creasing, tears or chips to the dustwrapper. Just very light foxing to the flaps. ***210mm x 148mm. 661 pages, including author's acknowledgments and foreword by Vera Brittain November 1929 - March 1933 to the fore plus 'The War Generation: Vale, VB. 1933' printed poem to the rear. ***Contents: Foreword, Part I. Ch I. Forward from Newcastle; II. Provincial Young-Ladyhood; III. Oxford versus War; IV. Learning versus Life; V. Camberwell versus Death. *** Part II. VI. "When the Vision Dies---"; VII. Tawny Island; VIII. Between the Sandhills and the Sea; IX. "This Loneliest Hour". *** Part III: X. Survivors Not Wanted; XI. Piping for Peace; XII. "Another Stranger". ***A second printing of the first American edition, published just a month after the first printing - the book went on to be reprinted numerous times in the 1930s. First and early printings of "Testament of Youth", in both the British and American editions, are extremely hard to find now. Copies in presentable condition are even harder to locate, and those in near-fine dustwrappers are virtually unobtainable. This is an exceptional example of a landmark 20th Century title. The American publication is of superior quality to the Victor Gollancz edition, which was produced using quite cheap materials. Gollancz editions are usually found with tanned pages, and torn, faded dustwrappers. The American edition is possibly a more satisfying book for a collector. A rare example. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
