[Autobiographical Novel Series] COMPLETE FIRST EDITIONS, First Printings. Fifteen volumes. Octavo (20 x 14 x 52cm). Publisher's variously coloured cloth with gilt titles to spines. Each with the distinctive dust-jacket illustrated by Broom Lynne, and variously priced between 12/6 and 30s. 'A Test to Destruction' is price clipped; 'Donkey Boy' has 3cm tear to base of jacket spine and toning to flyleaf; 'How Dear is Life' has some light ink staining from the jacket to spine, with some discolouration of cloth at crown and base; 'Love and the Loveless' has toning to jacket spine; 'The Golden Virgin' shows a little sunning to jacket spine, with a 1cm closed tear to the head; 'A Fox Under My Cloak' shows some marks to endpapers and half-title where pasted-in news clippings have been removed, quite heavy spotting to edges, and tape burns to reverse of the jacket, which is toned to the spine and a little worn and chipped to the edges. Overall a clean, bright set with no inscriptions. Some jackets are neither priced, nor clipped, presumably for export. Very good. Henry Williamson was an English writer whose work is often concerned with wildlife, English social history, and rural living. His epic novel series, 'The Chronicle of Ancient Sunlight' was published in 15 volumes, and the story follows the fortunes of a family from late Victorian times to the period of the Second World War.

The jacket of volume 1 has been repaired with brown paper on the verso of the spine tail. Short closed tear to the top edge of the front panel. 3, 4, 5 & 13 have tape repairs to the verso of the jackets. 3, 4 & 9 have ink ownerships on the front endpapers. Small loss to the spine ends of volumes 5 & 7 which are also slightly faded. All jackets unclipped. Ranging from fine in fine jacket to very good - in good + jacket. A nice set of first editions of Henry Williamson's magnum opus covering the period from late Victorian to the first years of the Second World War and concentrating on Phillip Maddison.

1st Edition. Galley Proofs, extensively corrected and annotated by Henry Williamson. A unique opportunity to acquire the only typescripts, galley proofs and book proofs still in private hands. All other ms. copies, typescripts, galley and page proofs of his major writings were deposited at the University of Exeter: the first batch in 1961 by Henry Williamson; the second batch by his estate in 1981 in lieu of inheritance tax; and the final batch following the death of his son Richard in 2022. Williamson was in the habit of making numerous manuscript and typescript versions of his books, heavily editing at every stage; even by the galley and proof stage there were often frequent corrections, deletions and other alterations. These all show the heavy use of his pen and pencil and hence a glance into the writer's mind as he created his work. None of these have been compared with the final published versions but all are likely to show differences, in some cases with major re-writings. This is one of a number of typescripts, galley and page proofs of Williamson's works which we have available, acquired from the Williamson estate. Please enquire for details.

First Edition
First edition, first printings with the exception of The Golden Virgin which is a second impression. 17 volumes, three of which are inscribed presentation copies from the author to his proof reader. Comprising the full set of fifteen first editions in publisher's original cloth and James Broom-Lynne illustrated dustwrappers, a marked up proof copy of The Phoenix Generation and a revised edition of The Innocent Moon. The first editions are all in excellent better than very good condition, the bindings square and firm. The contents are generally clean and bright throughout. "A Fox Under My Coat" has a small paperclip mark resulting in minor rust spots to the top edge of a couple of pages, "Test To Destruction" has two tape marks to the corners of the rear endpaper in addition to penciled notes on the same page, both "The Innocent Moon" and "The Power of the Dead" have light proof reader's notes in pencil to the margins and rear endpaper, and there is a tiny ink inscription to the top left corner of the reverse of the front endpaper of "The Dark Lantern". The closed top edge of several text blocks are a little dusty and spotted. All retain the original dustwrappers which show only minor wear at the extremities and uniform light toning to the spine. Donkey Boy has a small chip with loss to the top left corner of the spine. None of the dustwrappers are price-clipped. A very attractive set of the author's magnum opus. The Power of the Dead is inscribed by the author in black ink on the front endpaper "Arthur Oakey / in gratitude from Henry Williamson / 22 October 1963". Together with a proof copy of The Phoenix Generation, very good or better in the original publisher's green card covers printed in black. Corrections in red ink to the margins throughout, all of which appear to have been carried through to the first printing. Inscribed by the author on the title page "Arthur Oakey / Sept 1965 / from HW". Together with the first revised edition of The Innocent Man, a very good paperback published by Panther Books in 1965, with a Macdonald Publishers "compliments of the author" slip laid in, and inscribed by Henry Williamson in blue ink on the half title "with every good / wish to a / fellow author / from HW / 1965". Provenance: From the collection of Arthur Oakey; thence by descent. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request.
