Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. From the private collection of the owner of Winters Rare Books: The First, second and third impresssions of the first edition of Anne Frank's Het Achterhuis ("The Diary of a Young Girl"), published successively in June 1947, December 1947 and February 1948 in editions of 3,036, 6,830 and 10,500 copies by Uitgeverij Contact, Amsterdam. The books come with masterfully crafted facsimile dust jackets and accompanying belly bands. The facsimiles even reproduce the aging of the fragile paper, both on the inside and outside. Offered in an authentic Dutch 1940s display cabinet with museum glass and an acid-free inlay, resulting in a museum-worthy presentation. All three books are near fine copies with only minor wear: - The cover of the first printing has a browned spine as usual, there are a few inconspicuous small scratches on the front cover, the back cover has some browning to the upper corner and a very vague faded spot to the lower part. The binding of this copy is very firm, slightly bleeding on the endpapers as usual, the pages are clean without inscriptions, names or other marks. - - The light blue cardboard cover of the second printing is fresh with hardly any of use. The endpapers are intact with slight bleeding as usual. The binding is excellent. The name of the first owner is inconspicuously embossed on the first free endpaper. The lightly discolored pages are otherwise without marks or defects. - - - The third printing remains in excellent condition, with slight discoloration on the spine, clean endpapers, firm binding, and clean pages without names, inscriptions, or other marks. The printed section of the original red belly band of the third impression is still present. - - - - A truly exceptional and exclusive set of the first three prints of this world-famous book, which is being preserved and presented in a unique and highly fitting way. First Edition
First edition of the diary of Anne Frank in the original Dutch. Small octavo, original publisher's white and red paper-covered boards, illustrated with 2 photographic reproductions ofÂtheÂinterior ofÂtheÂhouse, 1 floor plan, and 2 facsimiles fromÂthe diary. Introduction by Annie Romein-Verschoor. Very good in the dust jacket which is in very good condition with some professional restoration and tape repairs to the verso, with the second issue in blue. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Exceedingly rare and desirable, especially in the original dust jacket. Anne began her new diary on her 13th birthday, June 12, 1942, by writing, âI hope I will be able to confide everything to you, as I have never been able to confide in anyone, and I hope you will be a great source of comfort and support.â (Page 1 bears a facsimile of this entry.) Only a month later, Anne and her family would go into hiding. Anne envisioned the future publication of her diaryâ"in fact, she began editing the text before the familyâs arrest on August 4, 1944 (three days after the diaryâs last entry)â"and chose the title Het Achterhuis (The House Behind) herself. After its initial release, the book was translated and published in more than 60 languages. Upon its publication in English, Eleanor Roosevelt called the diary âone of the wisest and most moving commentaries on war.â It remains one of the most widely read books in the world. âAnne Frankâs diary is too tenderly intimate a book to be frozen with the label âclassic,â and yet no lesser designation servesâ (Books of the Century, 180).
[Women History] [Literature] Frank, Anne. The Diary of a Young Girl . New York: Doubleday & Co., 1952. First Edition, later impression in the same year as first printing. With an introduction by Eleanor Roosevelt. Publisher's original black cloth boards, 285 numbered pages. Measures 5" x 7.5" inches. The Diary of a Young Girl is among the most enduring documents of the twentieth century, an insightful journal by a gifted Jewish teenager who died at Bergen-Belsen, Germany, in 1945. Anne Frank received a diary on her 13th birthday; only a few weeks later she went into hiding in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam. Her detailed, engagingly personal entries chronicle 25 trying months of claustrophobic life in the attic, revealing both the trials of her conditions (such as scant food and shabby outgrown clothes) and a deep sense of compassion and spiritual courage. The dust jacket is in good condition with some wear to the extremities and chipping at top and bottom of spine. The binding is sound. Covers and inside pages in very good condition.
