First Edition
First edition, fourth impression. 8vo. Near fine original blue cloth in a very good unclipped dust-jacket; slight lean to text block, a few small dents and scuffs to the jacket. Ink presentation inscription to title-page: 'To Sir Terence Clark, Best Wishes, Rory Stewart'. x, 324, [2]pp. London, Picador, Near fine first edition of Stewart's celebrated account of his journey across Afghanistan. Moving in the footsteps of Babur the Great, Stewart walked from Herat to Kabul, an extremely challenging route undertaken by few Western travellers (not least shortly after the US invasion in early 2022, when Stewart began his endeavour). Inscribed examples of the UK first are uncommon. This copy is inscribed to Sir Terence Clark (b.1934), a distinguished British diplomat, who spent much of his career in the Middle East. In addition to service in Bahrain, Jordan, Syria, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates, he was British Ambassador to Iraq (1985-89) and Oman (1990-94).
