The Sea, The Sea, Irish Murdoch, Chatto & Windus, 1978, First Edition, Second Impression Winner of the 1978 Booker Prize, included in the 2022 "Big Jubilee Read" list of seventy books by Commonwealth authors and adapted for radio, this is a story of the strange obsessions that haunt a self-satisfied playwright and director as he begins to write his memoirs. There is a neat owner's book plate to the front end paper. The book is in very good condition. The binding is straight and tight, the boards clean and the lettering on the spine bright. There is a crease mark to the bottom corner of the front board, shelf wear to the top and bottom edges of the spine, a crease mark along the length of the spine and a crease mark to the bottom corner of the back board. The toned and slightly foxed end papers and pages are free from tears. There is foxing to the top and fore edges. The clipped dust jacket, protected in a clear, removable cover is in very good condition with crease marks to the top edge of the front cover and shelf wear to the top edge of the spine. Will be dispatched carefully wrapped in bubblewrap and a cardboard box.

First edition thus (the Second Collected Edition). Hardcover. Page edges slightly foxed, back fixed endpaper a touch discoloured (from underlying binding glue), a couple interior pages with a bit of discolouration and a wrinkle, otherwise very good in fine dustjacket (sterling price intact). A nice copy of Murdoch's Booker Award winning novel. The first "Collected Edition" was published in 1984, in non-uniform jackets. This second "Collected Edition" in handsome uniform jackets (designed by Humphrey Stone, in marbled paper--different colours, same design-- by Compton Marbling), was published from 1990, closer to the end of the author's career, and presumably includes the 25 novels, from "Under the Net" to "The Message To The Planet" all in uniform appearance.

There is a fascinating chronology, a bibliography, and an elegant setting, as befits these two masterworks. A silk marker is bound in and the scarlet cloth binding has a black panel on the spine with the title in gilt. This copy has a mylar sleeved jacket, which is unclipped. An unread looking book, and a first edition thus.
