Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the rich tapestry of Scottish folklore and history, weaving together captivating tales set against the backdrop of a nation grappling with its identity. The author skillfully transports readers to a time of political turmoil and social transformation, where the echoes of ancient legends and the realities of a changing world collide. Through the lens of a quaint village and its inhabitants, we encounter a cast of memorable characters, each embodying the spirit of their era. From the scholarly schoolmaster to the superstitious shepherd, their voices paint a vivid portrait of a society caught between tradition and progress. The narrative explores themes of superstition, societal change, and the enduring power of storytelling, inviting readers to contemplate the ways in which the past shapes the present. As we journey through these tales, we witness the clash between old ways and new, as the encroachment of modernity disrupts the familiar rhythms of rural life. The author's keen observations on human nature and the complexities of Scottish culture offer profound insights into the universal struggle for identity and belonging. Ultimately, this book serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of folklore, reminding us that the stories we tell not only entertain but also illuminate the depths of the human experience. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

"Waverley is a 1814 historical novel by Sir Walter Scott. Initially published anonymously in 1814 as Scott's first venture into prose fiction, Waverley is often regarded as the first historical novel. The novel became so popular that Scott's later novels were advertised as being "by the author of Waverley". His series of novels on similar themes written during the same period have become collectively known as the "Waverley novels". In 1815, Scott was given the honour of dining with George, Prince Regent, who wanted to meet "the author of Waverley". It is thought that at this meeting Scott persuaded George that as a Stuart prince he could claim to be a Jacobite Highland Chieftain, a claim that would be dramatised when George became King and visited Scotland. The Waverley Novels are a long series of books by Sir Walter Scott. They take their name from Waverley (1814), which was the first. Their publication dates span 1814-1829.

Hardcover. Condition: Good to Very Good. No Jacket. WAVERLEY NOVELS 48 VOLS COMPLETE by SIR WALTER SCOTT, BART pub by ADAM AND CHARLES BLACK; 1877; EDINBURGH; CLOTH BINDINGS; GOOD TO VERY GOOD 48 volume complete illustrated set 1877 - 1879. This is an unusual set, in the original purple / red boards with the publisher's original white printed paper labels to the spine. It's not common to see a complete set in the original format like this, since most copies were rebound with the original bindings discarded. There is some rubbing and marking to the boards, and the spines are occasionally sunned, but the joints are strong and the hinges aren't cracked. The pages are extremely bright white, and clean throughout. Each vol is 18cm high, 13cm across the boards. The set stretches 155cm along the shelf. There is mottling and marks to some boards, but overall, it's all there in the original format, and it's this that makes them so unusual. There are engravings throughout and a pretty engraved frontispiece to each volume. In all, I'm quite fond of this set - a nice antiquarian collectable. The Waverley Novels are Sir Walter Scott's lasting legacy to the world of literature. Scott invented the historical novel format and in his day his novels propelled him to a level of stardom that would be seen again in the 20th Century dedicated to rock stars. Every Victorian gentleman had a set of his works on their shelves, but finding a complete set these days in decent condition is becoming increasingly tough. These look great on the shelf, and in the right library setting will really enhance your collection. Ideal for the lover of Victoriana, English Literature, Scottish related items, engravings and antiquarian books. Great.
