First Edition Signed
First edition, first impression, inscribed by the author on the half-title, "For Mr. and Mrs. George Palan - with kind regards James Morris 17.X.61". This classic piece of post-war travel writing is seldom encountered signed, more so with a signature predating the author's transition from James to Jan in 1972. Morris first visited Venice in the 1940s and was "immediately captivated by the city. He found it intoxicating" (Fenwick, p. 14). She returned in 1959 with her family, writing in this work about "what she calls the lust of Venice at that time, the beauty of the canals, the buildings, and especially the lagoon that left him speechless with pleasure" (ibid.). Further information on the recipients has proved elusive. Gillian Fenwick, Traveling Genius: the Writing Life of Jan Morris, 2008. Octavo. Frontispiece showing Venetian boats, 32 half-tone plates, maps in text. Original brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt, gilt Lion of St Mark on front board, map endpapers. With dust jacket. Spine ends and board edges lightly sunned, cloth otherwise bright, internally clean; jacket unclipped, spine toned, edges worn, without tears: a fine copy in near-fine jacket.
