Williams was a popular lecturer and leading exponent of the 'Wisconsin School' of historical interpretation, positing that economic motives were foremost in America's foreign policy and imperialism. Though associated with the New Left and anti-Vietnam War movements, Williams left the UW partly because of concerns about increasing student militancy.
