About this Item
1932, vii, 154pp, illustrated. Very light wear, else VG+ in G+, lightly sunned slipcase. Inscribed, signed and dated by the author, to Norman L. Dodge, long time editor of THE MONTH AT GOODSPEED'S. Many years ago, I was trying to impress my now, long deceased, bookseller friend, with the fact that I knew Booth Tarkington's first name and I was willing to bet him a lunch that he didn't. Well, he did, and he told me why he could never forget it. He related that sometime in the late 1930's, when he had owned a shop in downtown Louisville, a man came in one day looking for books by Booth Tarkington. In the course of his browsing, the customer asked my friend what he thought of Booth Tarkington's writings. My friend replied somewhat flippantly that just like everyone else he figured Tarkington was trying to write the Great American Novel, but that he certainly hadn't succeeded by a long shot, as far as he was concerned. The customer finished his browsing and came up to the counter with several books he had found, some by Tarkington, others not, to pay his bill. Upon paying in cash, he handed my friend his calling card. Glancing at the card, while bagging the books and making change, my friend was astounded, greatly embarrassed, and literally struck dumb, to see the name Newton Booth Tarkington. He had always regretted that he couldn't think of anything to say, not even a makeshift, weak, insincere apology, before Mr. Tarkington, laughing, picked up his purchases and walked out of the store.
