About this Item
First pressing, back cover of the gatefold inscribed by McLean in black ballpoint, "To Stan, thank you, Jackie McLean". Jacknife was recorded in two sessions in 1965-6, "two basic groups are involved here: a quintet/sextet with Morgan and/or Tolliver and a later quartet. Probably too avant-garde for release at the time" (Cook and Morton). The altoist gathered an impressive roster of talent for these Blue Note sessions. Pianist Larry Willis and drummer Jack DeJohnette are the constants, with Lee Morgan and Charles Tolliver sharing trumpet duties, both men playing with terrific fire; Larry Ridley and Don Moore are the bassists. The quintet/sextet date comprises tough-edged, driving hard-bop; the quartet session is a considerably looser affair and McLean's playing more "free". Richard Cook & Brian Morton, The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings, ninth edition, 2008; Discogs website. 2 12-inch vinyl LPs (Blue Note BN-LA457-H2), new plain white inner sleeve (original inners also preserved), original gatefold album cover. Some shelf wear to cover, a couple of short splits to lower edges, otherwise very good; discs in excellent condition. Seller Inventory # 150857
