About this Item

Description:

Number 38 of 750 copies, printed at the Riverside Press. With a leaf of manuscript from Hearn's essay: "Incense." Sixteen volumes; 6 in. x 9 in. The first volume has the page signed in ink, and with a small red seal of his wife, and a mounted page, written in ink, from the essay: "Incense," found in: "In Ghostly Japan"; color frontispieces, photogravure illustrations with titled tissue guards. Bound in three-quarter brown leather at The Riverside Press, with their stamp, with five raised bands on the spine, with gilt titling and design, with lighter brown cloth, gray marbled endpapers, top-edges gilt, brown silk bookmarker ribbons bound in. The upper spine ends of volumes one and twelve show part of the leather chipped away, with some lighter chipping or wear to the other upper spine ends of the other volumes; some wear and rubbing to outer hinges, edges, corner covers; volume 2 shows cracking to the front hinge. With the bookplates of Cleveland, Ohio based book collector, William G. Mather (1857-1951) on the front paste-downs. The manuscript page in Hearn's characteristic writing begins: "The yashiki of the prince. Shinto shrines are free from it;-incense being an abomination to the elder gods. But wherever Buddhism lives, there is incense." And ending: "[-] Many queer impressions of travel are associated in my own experience." The complete essay "Incense" is found in volume nine of this set, pp. 221-222. Sets with the manuscript leaf intact are uncommon. Postage is extra on this item. BAL 7977. Seller Inventory # MM-36
